Grand Homes & Renovations has designed a custom new home that gives you two distinct experiences. On the outside a contemporary style farm house reminiscent of the altoona area of Des Moines, Iowa; and inside the sleek and modern feel of an urban loft fused with function and family-friendly design. The clean lines, contrasting texture and color, and non-traditional materials used in construction all make this unique home a must-see. Style, functionality, efficiency and organization were cornerstones during our entire construction process. This is a HomeShowExpo 2011 featured home.
Using some of the same elements that inspired us while remodeling the 10th Street City Lofts in Downtown Des Moines, we gave the main level of the home an urban appeal right in the heart of suburban living. Exposed duct work, concrete walls, metal railings, and open design all work together to give the space deeper dimension while not sacrificing function. As a custom home builder, we love accommodating homeowners’ unique styles.
Entering the rear foyer, the house was designed for how the owners would use the house daily. The mudroom features a simple bench with storage on either side with a transom above. The laundry is right off the kitchen and also holds a small pantry which allows for additional storage and counter space. This will allow the family of four to keep everyday items organized while the kitchen and living areas remain uncluttered.
Entering the large kitchen, the urban loft really starts to take shape through the use of large metal pulls on dark stained cherry cabinetry arranged in a functional galley design. This is all topped with heavy and rich custom granite counters which are bathed in natural light from both sides of the room.
As you transition into the rest of the main level you will notice the 2¼” hickory floors were laid at a 45° angle to maintain the sleek and contemporary feel. Tall ceilings, smooth walls and surfaces, exposed ductwork that runs the length of the house and lots of large windows and doors give you that sense of freedom to roam the space while noticing all the other subtle but important design elements in the home.
Heading upstairs you are led by a naturally finished steel rail that really ties the urban feel of the first level and the contemporary design of the second level together. Here you will find the 3 bedrooms, each of them designed specifically for their user, 2 bathrooms, and a common area for the family to enjoy in a more private setting. The master suite has his and her closets and a bath featuring a unique stone wall, sleek Kohler fixtures, and dark tile.
In the end, Grand Homes & Renovations worked with the owners to design the home they wanted. We helped weigh the choices between design and budget without sacrificing function. A smaller laundry room, wire shelving, and cedar decking helped keep the price within target while not compromising elegance, while other elements were incorporated to customize the home for how the owners would use the space.
