This custom home won several awards as a featured home in the Greater Des Moines Home Builders Association Home Show 2012. On the exterior of the home we used a combination of stucco and brick, and black-framed Pella windows. The back portion has minimal decking, which allows for more space for the screened in patio, which is outfitted with a television alcove and a fireplace, both set into a natural limestone wall. Inside the home, the beautiful, spacious master suite has a seating area and lots of windows to allow natural daylight in and give the homeowner a view of the surrounding golf course.

The master suite also includes a bathroom, a custom built closet and a laundry room. In the bathroom, the his and her sinks are set into a smooth quartz countertop. Combining the stone wall with the countertop offers a unique blend of rough and sleek. The addition of the natural travertine flooring and the steam shower with matching natural travertine tile and metal accents, gives the bathroom a spa feel. At Grand Homes most of our shower designs, as is the case with the shower in this home, are customized with features like corner seats or specific sizing, to fit the needs of each individual customer.

The spacious laundry room offers a built-in space for the washer and dryer, plus plenty of countertop and cabinet space, for all the homeowners' utility needs. Grand Homes created the guest bathroom to be stylish, but distinct from the master bathroom. We used cherry cabinets, a granite countertop and a custom made mirror. In the living room we positioned the television by the fireplace, and both are inset into a real limestone wall. Built-in cabinet doors keep the television out of view when it is not in use. An arched peek-through wall cut-out keeps the kitchen and living room more open to each other.

The kitchen has dark stain cherry cabinets and black granite. We designed the space to fit the large Miele appliances. On each end of the kitchen island we included a storage area. The sink and dishwasher are installed in the island to keep the space conversational. Our homeowner, a single male, wanted to keep the kitchen open, clean and friendly.

Grand Homes did not include any formal dining area in the design of this home, but instead we kept the dining space casual by including an eat-in area in the kitchen and additional seating for dining positioned around the island. The classy office in this home features stained black trim, painted black cabinets, grass wallpaper, and for a unique touch, we installed a repurposed glass jar light.

The stairway to the basement features custom hammered rails and spindles. Throughout the home, including above the kitchen island and above the stairway, we used what we call “insulator lights,” as the glass is shaped to replicate the look of antique glass telephone pole insulators. As we do in all our projects, we worked closely with the homeowner to design this home to be the home he desired.
